SS IDOMENEUS

The IDOMENEUS was a steam ship owned by the Alfred Holt Line.

She was built by Scott & Co of Greenock in 1899.

She was 6764 gross tonnage, 441ft 10" long and 52ft 7" beam.

She had an in service speed of 10 knots.

On the 15th Sept 1917 she was travelling from New York to Liverpool when she was torpedoed by U67 off the West of Ireland. She didnt sink but was towed to Vatersay and beached before being temporary repaired and then towed to Liverpool for repairs.

4 men were killed by the torpedo which struck the main engine room.

George Henry Duddleston, Junior Engineer aged 22 of Birkenhead, Liverpool, his body was never found and his death is listed on the WW1 section at Tower Hill, London.

3 "Chinese" seamen were also killed and are buried in the Annie Jane Memorial grave on Vatersay, they are:-

Chan Sung , Fireman aged 30yrs

Chung Cheong, Fireman , aged 31 yrs

Leong Kow, Fireman, aged 29 yrs
