History of VATERSAY
A  very good history of Vatersay exists on the Barra Island site written by Flora Gillies.

Here you will find an explanation of some of the less detailed items in that history and also some minor corrections.

Firstly, there has almost always in living memory been a ferry service of one kind or another between Barra and Vatersay. Most of these services have been connected with the Royal Mail and its delivery. One of them being James Stewart who operated the service as part of his role as Postman to Vatersay in the 30's and 40's. Dependant on what mail there was for the island he would leave Castlebay pier and land at either Uidh jetty or Caolas.
Cows would be towed behind the small boat and up to 4 sheep within the boat. The boat itself was an open boat of about 18feet in length (5.5Mtrs) and named "Girl Georgie".
